Controversial road tunnel under Rotterdam gets green light

Transport minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen has given the go-ahead to a controversial project to build a road tunnel west of Rotterdam to link the busy A20 and A15 motorways in an effort to cut congestion.

The Blankenburg tunnel will be a toll tunnel, costing possibly €2 for cars and €6 for a lorry, Nos television said.
Green organisations had favoured another tunnel project further west. They say this option, linking Vlaardingen and Maassluis, will cause more environmental damage. Locals also say the plan will destroy the last green area between the two towns, the Volkskrant reports.
Work on the project is put at €1.2bn, the ministry said.
The plans published on Wednesday also include a new €990m link between the A13 and A16 which the minister says will make it quicker to reach Rotterdam airport.
