A Catholic bishop should quit over abuse scandal, says SGP leader

If a Catholic bishop were to resign because of the sexual abuse scandal it would send out a strong signal about how seriously the church takes the issue, according to Kees van der Staaij, leader of the fundamentalist Christian SGP, the Netherlands Dagblad reports on Wednesday.

The Protestant paper says Van der Staaij will make the statement in television talk show Moraalridders on Wednesday evening.
Earlier this month, a church commission said between 10,000 and 20,000 children had been abused in Catholic institutions between World War II and 1985.
‘None of the current bishops was personally involved, otherwise resignation would have been appropriate,’ Gerard de Korte, bishop of the diocese of Leeuwarden-Groningen, told the paper in response.
