The Netherlands calls for UN sanctions against Iran

The United Nations security council should impose extra sanctions on Iran because of its nuclear weapons programme, foreign affairs minister Uri Rosenthal said in a briefing to MPs.

The cabinet is also putting pressure on the EU to increase its sanctions against Iran, Rosenthal said.
The drive for sanctions follows the publication of a report by the IAEA which says Teheran was developing nuclear weapons until at least last year.
‘This is unacceptable. The international community must exercise maximum pressure and bring in tough sanctions,’ Rosenthal said.
The minister also said he remains very concerned about Iran’s human rights record and its position as a power in the Middle East.
