Spending power has risen for most households

Government efforts to make sure everyone is better off working than on benefits still have some way to go, according to a report for the social affairs ministry published on Monday.

The report shows for example that a single parent who works four days a week and earns a minimum wage will be 4% worse off than on benefits.
The government plans to reduce benefits gradually over the next 20 years so that it becomes financially worth it to work.
The report also shows the spending power of most households rose between 2002 and 2010. However, double income households with no children and single people on average incomes were slightly worse off.
Single parents’ spending power, by contrast, rose 9% over the period, while pensioners with a small company pension have 7% more to spend.
