PVV go-slow set to save civil servants who won't marry gays

Friday 04 November 2011

Legislation to sack civil servants who refuse to oversee same sex marriages is likely to take so long to be drawn up that the issue is no longer likely to cause the current coalition any problems, according to media reports on Friday.

Last week, the government's alliance partner, the anti-Islam PVV, said it would draw up legislation to close the loophole which allows civil servants to refuse to carry out gay weddings.

That decision means there is now majority support for a ban in parliament, which could have put the minority coalition into a difficult situation.

Objections

The VVD CDA coalition is not in favour of a change in the law. It says every local authority has a registrar who will marry same sex couples so civil servants who have religious objections to gay marriage can refuse to do so.

But sources say the PVV is planning to produce a 'time consuming' proposal which will delay any vote. And because it is producing its own legislation, the PVV will not support a vote on the issue proposed by any other party.

This would also give breathing space to the fundamentalist Christian group, the SGP. The coalition relies on that party's support in the senate or upper house of parliament. The SGP opposes gay marriage on Biblical principles.

According to research by gay rights campaign group COC earlier this year, 58 local councils employ a total 0f 102 registrars who refuse to marry same sex couples. Nearly all are orthodox Christians.

Why doesn't this surprise me? Now if only PVV voters would realize what an empty shell this party is. All those voters want change and they choose the worst possible party for that.

That is good news, stop this being forced upon society by pro gay politicians and the powerful gay media lobby? Here is a good comparison between traditional marriage and why we need protect the institution. Gay marriage is a farce. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/29/us/29sfmetro.html

Why save them, they are wasting taxpayers money?

I thought the PVV sold themselves on being Pro-Gay equality? Certainly, many of their defenders have been from the gay community.

I guess like absolutely every other member of Dutch society they claim to care about: elderly, women, jews, workers - they don't give a darn about social or legal issues, unless those issues relate to one subject, and one subject alone.

Homosexuals have been around since the beginning of the human race. I would have thought that by now, especially this day & age, people would have realized that this minority will always be with us, have the same needs & deserve the same rights!

Religion has no right to interfere with natural selection, physics or nature.

Homosexuality is one of natures ways to control breeding, as opposed to religion, do the right thing!

Kim Kardashian's 72 day marriage certainly showed me the worth of heterosexual marriage over homosexual marriage.

The visitor,

This is not a about the religious interfering with anything. This is about the government forcing people to go against their own religious beliefs!

A civil servant can't refuse to do something against his/her own conscience? Imagine if the government tried making you violate your own convictions!

@highlander: you cite an interesting article that confirms what is well known: humans are not monogamous. With straight people, it’s called affairs or cheating but with gay people it does not have such negative connotations. Yet, both straight and gay are not monogamous. So, following your reasoning, marriage itself is a farce and should be abolished OR we should provide a taxonomy for newly wed couples so they know what words to use for specific behaviors

@leon: Monogamy is absolutely conditional for the long term success of heterosexual marriage. Sexual complementarity between man and woman makes possible another feature of marriage: the giving of life. The love between man and woman is designed to call new human life into existence and in so doing make the shared life of the couple more abundantly fulfilling. It does not always produce new life, but that is what it is designed to do. So marriage, to succeed, must be exclusive, permanent, unconditional, and open to new life. Therefore, totally different to the Gay, open marriage.

@Sean: The government exists, is real & has power, as with religion is merely personal belief & should not have the power to interfere with progress & stability. (History tells us so.)
