Morgan the orca heads for Tenerife on Tuesday

An orca found in a severely weakened state in the Wadden Sea in July 2010 will begin her journey to the Loro Parque amusement park on the Spanish island of Tenerife on Tuesday.

The future of the orca, known as Morgan, had been the subject of an intense legal battle, with conservationists calling for her to be released back into the wild.
However, last week the courts cleared the way for the orca to be moved from the Harderwijk Dolfinarium, where she has been nursed back to health, to Tenerife.
On Monday, Hardewijk’s mayor invoked special police powers to ensure the move proceeds smoothly and without interference from protestors.
Crane
According to the Volkskrant, the 1,100 kilo orca is to be removed from her tank by crane and kept in a special harness in a small tank of water for the duration of the journey. She will be accompanied by her regular keepers and special care will be taken on the plane journey to minimise the risk of turbulence.
‘Zoos ship animals all over the world on a daily basis. They have a lot of experience and there are few problems,’ a marine biologist at Wageningen University told the paper.
In Tenerife, Morgan will share a tank with five other orcas.
According to the Associated Press, fewer than 50 orcas are held in captivity worldwide and the bulk of them are owned by SeaWorld, a subsidiary of US private equity giant BlackRock.
