Justice ministry cracks down on illegal fireworks

The punishment for setting off a self-made firework bomb may be increased to a 15-month jail term, the AD reports on Tuesday.

However, if people are injured when the bomb is set off, the final jail term is likely to be higher, the paper says. People who sell fireworks to minors are also to face jail terms of up to two years.
The justice ministry has also set up a special task force to track down people who place films of illegal firework bomb explosions on website YouTube.
Every year in the run up to the New Year celebrations, the police make dozens of arrests and seize thousands of kilos of illegal fireworks under the vuurwerkwet (fireworks law). This states that fireworks may only be sold to the public from licensed locations during a few days prior to December 31.
