Former Ivory Coast president faces four charges at international court

The former president of Ivory Coast arrived in the Netherlands by plane in the early hours of Wednesday morning to face human rights charges at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

The court had issued an arrest warrant for Laurent Gbagbo on Tuesday. The charges against him include murder, rape and other crimes following last year’s disputed presidential election.
According to the BBC, more than 3,000 people died in the conflict which followed the former president’s refusal to accept defeat. He was finally removed from office in April.
According to website nu.nl, this is the first time a former head of state will appear before the court. Former Liberian leader Charles Taylor and Yugoslavian president Slobodan Milosevic both appeared before special ad-hoc tribunals.
