Foreign students take up too many student rooms: PVV

Native Dutch students are being squeezed out of student accommodation by foreign students, Eric Lucassen, an MP for the anti-immigration PVV, told news website nu.nl on Thursday.

‘They are taking the places of Dutch students. That cannot be justified given the huge shortage of student accommodation,’ Lucassen told the website.
Lucassen said he did not know how many foreign students are in the Netherlands but said student housing bodies reserve 10% of their rooms for students from abroad.
Germans
‘Given that 30,000 Germans are studying in the Netherlands, I do not know why they need a house reserved for them. Given the distance [from the borders], they can easily find something themselves.’
Some 10% of the total student body comes from abroad, nu.nl said.
Last week, home affairs minister Piet Hein Donner announced plans to stimulate the development of an extra 16,000 student rooms to offset the shortfall.
