Dutch commander in Srebrenica ‘was aware’ of impending massacre
The commander of the Dutch forces in the Muslim enclave of Srebrenica, where 8,000 men and boys were massacred by Serb forces, was aware the killings would happen, according to an eye witness, the AD reports on Tuesday.
The claims are made in a television show to be broadcast on Wednesday.
Thom Karremans has always denied he knew the men and boys would be murdered. The enclave was under the protection of Dutch Nato forces known as Dutchbat when it was over-run by the Serbs.
‘Will not end well’
But a former surgeon with the Dutch troops has told television programme Profiel he and Karremans watched the men being taken away by the forces of Serbian general Ratko Mladic. Karrenmans said at the time ‘it will not end well with them,’ Ger Kremers reportedly told the show.
All the Dutchbat soldiers were aware the Muslims would be killed, Kremers said.
The revelations come at a sensitive time, the AD says. Last year, families of the victims began legal action against the Dutch army for not preventing the deaths. Justice officials are currently investigating Karremans’ role to see if he can be held personally liable.
In July, The Hague district court ruled the Netherlands can be held liable for the deaths of three men who had sought refuge in the army compound, clearing the way for compensation payments.
