Banks should take risks seriously, says central bank chief

The decision-making process at some of the Netherlands big seven banks and insurance companies sometimes involves too little attention for risks and counter-arguments, central bank president Klaas Knot said in an interview with the Volkskrant.

‘Some executives are in the grip of a group mentality, which can result in collective optimism and an underestimation of the risks,’ the new central bank president told the paper.
The paper says a number of institutions have now taken steps to improve their risk management. Knot wants bankers to have ‘greater awareness’ and ‘reflect more’ on their activities, he told the paper.
