Amsterdam mayor wants to wind down the Queen’s Day party

The traditional free concert on Amsterdam’s Museumplein during the Queen’s Day celebrations will be a thing of the past if the city council supports mayor Eberhard van der Laan’s plans to tone down the celebrations.

The mayor says the concert, organised by radio station 538, must be stopped because of public safety fears.
Some 200,000 people attended the concert featuring a long line-up of Dutch stars last year.
The mayor says the large mass of people, coupled with heavy drinking, is a disaster waiting to happen.
New location
He wants to move the event to the Rai congress centre area, Zuidoost or Noord. But 538 says if the ban goes ahead, it will move the free festival to another city.
The city council will vote on the mayor’s plans on November 17.
The rules surrounding Queen’s Day, when the city turns into a giant flea market, have been tightened up several time in recent years. For example, all outdoor events must now end by 20.00 hours rather than 21.00.
