Afghan police training mission to be expanded

The Dutch police training mission in Afghanistan is to be expanded to include junior officers but border police must remain outside the programme, MPs agreed on Wednesday.

In addition, Dutch police officers can train their Afghan colleagues to give courses themselves, the Volkskrant reported.
Last week the paper said the move to include border police in the training programme could prove controversial. Afghanistan wants its border police to have a similar role to the Dutch marechaussee or military police and that could conflict with the ‘civilian’ focus of the Dutch mission.
