There are 414 places in the Netherlands where the ground is so polluted it poses a health risk, junior environment minister Joop Atsma has confirmed to the Volkskrant.

Two years ago there were nearly 2,000 places considered to be a ‘risk to humans’.
The remaining locations are due to be cleaned up by 2015. Provinces and local councils are responsible for the clean-up process, the paper says.
