Supermarket turnover up, consumer confidence down

Supermarket turnover rose in September but consumer confidence fell to a low point, research agency GfK said on Wednesday.

Supermarkets saw their turnover rise 2.8% to €2.45bn, compared with the year earlier period. This was due to an increase of 1.3% in store visits and a rise in spending of 1.5%.
Consumer confidence, however, took a tumble: down from -31 in September to -48 in October. The new low point is due to falling confidence in the economic and uncertainty about the financial situation since budget day, says GfK.
Confidence is lower the older people are. For those aged between 18 and 29 confidence is -33. For those over 50 it is -56.
