Some 1,200 people signed up to become an organ donor on the first day of a week-long campaign to increase donor numbers, a spokeswoman for the organisation told news agencies on Monday evening.

This is more than the previous record held by a university in Utah and will be entered in the Guinness Book of Records, the spokeswoman said.
Some 3.1 million people in the Netherlands are currently registered organ donors. The average waiting list for a kidney is currently 4.5 years. For other organs the wait is around 12 months.
