‘Netherlands lags on sustainable energy’

The Netherlands is falling behind other European countries when it comes to reducing CO2 emissions, reducing energy use and encouraging renewable energy, according to a new report by three influential government think-tanks.

The three organisations, which advice the transport and environment ministries, called for the transition to a more sustainable energy policy to be speeded up and said the government should set clear targets which are anchored in law.
The organisations also want the government to work on a long term commitment on energy use with industry – which should also have a legal basis if voluntary agreements fail to work. They also want the tax system to work towards a polluter pays principle.
The groups also say they are positive about the government’s plans to force energy companies to supply a fixed percentage of green energy.
