European migrants need Benelux-wide approach: Netherlands

Social affairs minister Henk Kamp is campaigning for a Benelux-wide approach to managing the influx of eastern Europeans into the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg, news agency ANP reports on Monday.

The campaign will kick off on Monday afternoon with the signing of an agreement between a number of Dutch and Belgian cities. The agreement commits them to work together to combat the exploitation of European migrants and to exchange information and experiences, ANP says.
The agreement also states that the ‘too rosy picture’ many Poles and eastern Europeans have of the three Benelux countries should be counteracted. Migrants should be warned that they often end up in ‘deprived circumstances which can lead to human tragedies’.
Earlier this month, Kamp made an agreement with his Belgian counterpart on a joint approach to dealing with illegal employment agencies which are often active in both countries.
