Dutch jailed for 50 years for cocaine smuggling

Eight foreigners, including two Dutch nationals, have each been sentenced to 50 years in prison by a court in Gambia, news agency AP reports.

A third Dutch citizen who was charged in the case died while incarcerated, officials told AP.
Four Venezuelans, one Nigerian and a Mexican citizen pleaded not guilty to the charges alongside the Dutch. The arrests led to the seizure of two tons of cocaine.
AP says countries along Africa’s west coast have become major trafficking hubs for cocaine on its way from Latin American to the European market.
