Councils hope to get lost Icelandic savings back after court ruling

Dutch city and provincial councils which invested money in Icelandic bank Landsbanki which went bankrupt in 2008 are hopeful they will get most of their money back following an Icelandic court ruling.

The supreme court ruled on Friday that councils with money in Landsbanki are to be given priority creditor status, ahead of commercial banks, insurance companies and hedge funds.
Dutch councils had some €200m in Landsbanki. Unlike private individuals, they were not covered by savings guarantees.
Noord Holland is the biggest creditor. It had €78m in Landsbanki. Amstelveen, Naarden, Dordrecht and the island of Texel are among the 15 local governments that lost money.
