Cold winter on the way

Tuesday 11 October 2011

This winter is likely to be another cold one according to current projections, weatherman Dennis Wilt from Meteoconsult has told television programme EenVandaag.

According to the long-range forecasts, winter 2011/12 will be colder than average, Wilt said. The first cold snap is likely to hit at the beginning of November.

Local councils are also stockpiling salt for the roads in an effort to avoid a repeat of last year’s shortages, the programme said. Rotterdam, for example, has eight million kilos of salt in storage.

British weather forecasters have said Europe is in for a mini ice age.

Both last winter and the previous one in the Netherlands were colder and had more snow than average.

Looks like a PR-stunt or marketing gimmick to uplift economy by convincing people buy woolen clothes & winter gadgets!

When they say average what sort of time span are they talking about? If I am remembering correctly the last 3 or 4 years have been very cold and snowy, then before that not so much. So the average of the last 4 years? Or 20years? or 100'000 years :)

Anyone could have predicted this forecast just based on previous weather patterns.

Next they will be forecasting a warm Spring!

Throwing salt on the roads might improve the traffic temporary. But imagine the money spent in the summer to renew the damaged asphalt. Not a good idea. Drivers should learn somehow to drive on snow.

gil, what damages asphalt, most, are low temperatures, not salt. It is impossible to drive vehicles on snow at high speeds. Now imagine crawling at 30 km/h from Tilburg to Amsterdam...

@David: When they say "average" they are talking about a time span of the past 30 years, so 1980-2010. All the climate data was recently updated to advance the time span by a decade (before the end of 2010, it was based on 1970-2000).

@The visitor: Oh really? ANYONE can predict the future of a chaotic system? What's the weather going to be like on October 21st? Something tells me you'll be DEAD WRONG. Have some respect for the scientists that have devoted their LIVES to the pursuit of this knowledge. What you said was uncalled for, uneducated and just plain rude.

@ Jitterboogie: try making a comment about the article for a change instead of this nonsense! Once again, anyone could hazard a guess (Prediction) as to the coming Winter, and without spending a lifetime + salary.
(Nobody knows fore sure!)
