Parliament nods through emergency ID card legislation

Parliament on Thursday afternoon voted for emergency legislation to reinstate ID card fees, reports news agency ANP.

The new legislation closes a loophole created when the high court ruled earlier this month that the cards should be free because they are to the government’s benefit and not the card holders’.
The law still has to pass through the upper house and senators have said they have ‘fundamental questions’ about the new law.
The cabinet does not have a majority in the upper house.
