Joran van der Sloot admits murder in police video

Monday 26 September 2011

Dutchman Joran van der Sloot, currently in jail accused of murdering a young Peruvian woman last year, confesses to the murder in a police video released on Monday, say press reports.

He tells police he hit and strangled Stephany Flores after she read an email on his computer that 'caused me pain'.

It is thought the email referred to the disappearance of American schoolgirl Natalee Holloway on the Caribbean island of Aruba six years ago. Van der Sloot has twice been arrested and released on suspicion of involvement.

In the video, broadcast by the Peruvian news station RPP Noticias, Van der Sloot says Stephany hit him after reading the email. He reacted by hitting her several times and then strangling her.

When a police agent asks him: 'Did you murder Stephany Flores?, Van der Sloot replies: 'Yes'.

The 24-year-old then took her possessions and fled to Chili where he was arrested three weeks later.

Van der Sloot has been in jail in Peru since June 2010 where he is facing 30 years in jail if found guilty. The Flores family, however, are pressing for a life sentence.

Good, and about time too. This young man comes across as arrogant, spoilt, uncaring and violent. To murder his girl friend for simply reading his e-mails is way out of line. I hope his computer has been taken, and maybe can throw some light on the Natalee Holloway case, which my instinct tells me that he was involved in.

I sure hope that the Flores family succeeds in getting the life sentence for Joran van der Sloot. He has now killed two people and he deserves to be jailed for life. If not then who will be his next victim? What if he gets out early on "good behaviour"?? A life sentence is almost too good for him. He should be put to death. An eye for an eye! A tooth for a tooth!

@ Pam.I can understand your feelings on this but I don't think Peru has the DP.

Personally I wish the press would stop glamourising criminals and giving them constant publicity. This is going on in the other side of the world and is nothing to do with us.

@Sammy Sneek, I beg your pardon, but Joran van der Sloot is a Dutch citizen and that is why the coverage is here in The Netherlands. I don't believe that the press is "glamourising" criminals. They are only reporting the news and I personally am interested in what his fate will be so that maybe there will be justice for both Stephanie and Natalee. May their souls rest in peace.

@Pam: An eye for an eye leaves the whole world BLIND - Gandhi. The death penalty should be abolished all across the globe. If you think it is okay for the state to murder someone, you are bringing yourself down to his level and you are no better than Van der Sloot himself.

Sammy this is not "glamourising" anyone. It's a legitimate press report on the case.

The maximum sentence term in Peru is 30 years, release possible at 18, except for crimes against the state like treason, spying etc.

By Andre L. | 27 September 2011 3:32 PM

@Andre L., so that means that in a possible 18 to 30 years he will be free to go out and murder again. This kid is mixed up and needs some serious help. His mother even admits that he needs help and she tried to get him help, but he refused. I feel sorry for the next family that will be mourning the death of their daughter. I am extremely sympathetic to the Holloway family who has not been able to give their daughter a final resting place in their hearts. Imagine not knowing where your child is or what has happened to them!
