Gouda’s mayor survives no confidence vote over holiday home

The mayor of Gouda has a survived a no confidence vote following a report criticising the way he handled the building of a holiday home in Ghana.

The report found that Wim Cornelis had mixed personal and business interests in building the house, in the Ghanese town of Elmina, in 2007. Elmina is a twin town with Gouda.
In addition, the construction broke local building regulations, the report found. However, Cornelis did not benefit financially from the irregularities, the report said.
Cornelis, who apologised to the council, says he will now focus his efforts on Gouda and has broken all business connections with Elmina.
Maastricht
In January 2010, the mayor of Maastricht resigned after losing city council support because of his Bulgarian holiday home.
The resignation followed a report into the scandal which said Gerd Leers’ actions had given rise to a potential conflict of interest and he had confused his public and private interests.
Leers is now immigration minister in the new government.
