Earthquake hits NijmegenFriday 09 September 2011 The earthquake which shook Nijmegen and its surroundings on Thursday night was one of the strongest to hit the Netherlands over the past 100 years, the Telegraaf reports. The quake, measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, hit at around 21.00 hours. No-one was hurt and there are no reports of damage but the tremors were felt as far away as Utrecht. The epicentre was in Germany. The strongest quake to hit the Netherlands in the past 100 years was in 1992, when an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit Roermond. Quakes normally take place in the south of the country but also happen in Groningen province as the land settles following natural gas extraction. © DutchNews.nl
First time in a while the Earth moved for me... By @CluthaDubh | September 9, 2011 8:39 AM I KNEW I felt it last night! I'm way down in Limburg and we live right on the border to Germany. I was in my computer chair and felt it move under me but my husband didn't feel a thing! He basically acted like I was making it up LOL! By LJK | September 9, 2011 10:09 AM I am used to quakes but this one felt like a kick and didn't last long (I'd say less than a second). I felt my couch moved a bit though. By david | September 9, 2011 10:14 AM I was having dinner with 7 other people. A cover for along cabinet that opens from top (hinge is on the bottom) fell open when nobody was near it and we were all sitting down. Nobody thought of an earthquake, but now it makes sense. By Robert | September 9, 2011 11:14 AM I knew I felt it in Amsterdam! I was on the couch watching TV after dinner and I felt the minor tremor. I thought I was imagining stuff, but this confirms it! By AnotherExpat | September 9, 2011 6:34 PM Experienced a few earthquakes in the Philippines since 2000. You feel it more if you are sitting down. Kind of weird to feel the ground shaking and concrete waving around like water. So long they are not dangerous, can be fun and a good conversation piece. By The visitor | September 9, 2011 6:46 PM I too felt the quake. It was as if someone kicked the chair in which I was seated and doing some work on the computer. I live in Naarden. By M.C.M. Iqbal | September 9, 2011 7:30 PM Quite noticeable here on the Graafseweg in Nijmegen - the building I live in gently swayed and creaked, lasted a few seconds. By Mark | September 9, 2011 8:26 PM We felt it in Roosendaal. My husband's computer desk shook a bit. He said "Hey what is happening? An earthquake?" By Patti | September 9, 2011 9:41 PM I was sitting at my pc, my husband was laying on the sofa, and we felt definate movements under the house, and it lasted several seconds. In England, I lived on a very busy road with lots of heavy trucks going by and the house/windows shook when they rumbled past. But this is a very quiet road in Westervoort and there are never trucks along here and I've never felt this house move before. I immediately reacted and exclaimed to my husband, "What the **** was that? I think it was an earthquake!" He had felt it too. Indeed, no more Nuclear plants! Wind, sun & wave/water energy, please! By Shirley | September 10, 2011 10:37 AM @Shirley By Vlad | September 12, 2011 10:19 AM I knew I felt it, I'm on the top floor of a 3 story house in Kaiserswerth, Dusseldorf and it started shaking, my chair and the wardrobe too. Why wasn't it on German news.
