Biggest trade union group opposes long-term temporary contract plan

The FNV federation is opposed to economic affairs ministry plans to introduce longer temporary employment contracts.

At the moment, employers have to offer workers a permanent contract after they have had three six-month contracts.
But economic affairs minister Maxime Verhagen plans to allow employers to give staff longer temporary contracts instead of a permanent job. These could be up to seven or ten years, he said in a briefing to parliament.
The FNV says the current situation is better for workers. For example, a permanent contract makes it easier to take out a mortgage.
