Away from home students get fatter

Students who move out of their parents’ house weight 2.1 kilo’s more after three months compared to their stay at home peers, writes the Volkskrant on Tuesday.

The weight gain is most prevalent among students who join a student club or fraternity. UMC Groningen, which interviewed 2000 first year students, calculates that after a year a student could be heavier by as much as 8 kilo’s.
The culprits are lack of exercise plus over-consumption of beer and snacks. ‘Some people drink more than forty beers a week’, researcher Paul de Vos says.
A small number of students retained the same weight. They moved out and brought a pair of scales with them, the paper says.
