Aid minister won’t rule out further cuts

Aid minister Ben Knapen would be prepared to consider further cuts in the aid budget if pressured to do so, Nos television reports.

The coalition agreement between the VVD, CDA and anti-Islam PVV includes a commitment to cut spending on development aid from 0.8% of GDP to 0.7% in 2012.
Actual spending on aid is being cut by €1bn by 2012, of which €400m-worth of cuts still has to be found.
The PVV has already said that if extra spending cuts are needed on top of the €18bn already agreed, then the aid budget should be further reduced.
