Tougher sanctions needed against Syria, says foreign minister

The European Union’s sanctions against Syria need to be made tougher in the light of the weekend violence, foreign minister Uri Rosenthal said on Sunday night.

This means the UN security council should draw up a resolution condemning the violence as soon as possible, the minister said.
Britain has also called on the UN to act.
The weekend violence left up to 140 demonstrators dead, according to some estimates, as president Bashar al-Assad cracks down on campaigners calling for reforms.
