Students take universities to courtMonday 29 August 2011 A group of students will this week subpoena eight universities because of the increased fees being charged for a first master's degree to cover the lack of subsidy for a second degree, says the Volkskrant. Universities do not receive a subsidy for a second master's degree and sometimes charge students thousands of euros more than the legal €1,713 tuition fee for a first master's study in order to break even. The students, united as the Collective Action Universities (SCAU), have repeatedly asked the universities for clarification but received no reply or an unsatisfactory answer. The students' lawyer wants a temporary suspension of the higher fees and uniform tuition fees for the duration of the case. © DutchNews.nl
You don't want to pay, simply don't go to university. By joanna | August 29, 2011 3:49 PM Why receieve any subsidy for a second masters at all? The logical career route in any other country after a (single) Masters is to get a job or enrol to do a PhD.... but maybe that requires too much effort, and repeating more masters degrees (preferably as similar to the one you have done before)is easier than either of these options? Let's be honest, the student lifestyle has been too attractive a life option for too long! By Steve | August 30, 2011 2:58 PM

I imagine as many of the subsidies and other social benefits are reduced or removed completely, and the costs of everything starts rising, that this type of suing will become quite popular - as it is in the US for many years. Funny I was told that NL would never become like this not so long ago. Things sure have changed!
