Students leave university on average €14,657 in debt

The family finance institute Nibud is warning that government plans to change higher education financing will push students even deeper into the red, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday.

Nibud says students have now built up an average debt of €14,657 by the time they leave university, double the debt accumulated in 2004.
Cabinet plans to increase fees for slow students, change the basic grant system and reduce entitlement to public transport discount cards will only add to the debt problem, Nibud says.
Students who live away from home get a basic grant of €266 a month and can borrow up to around €670.
