Not all internet ‘catch a crook’ websites will face fines: minister

Not all private individuals who place photos or video footage of suspected criminals on line will be fined under new legislation on internet privacy, junior justice minister Fred Teeven said at the weekend.

Last week, CDA and other MPs said they did not support plans to introduce fines of up to €25,000 for shopkeepers, petrol station owners and private individuals who break privacy laws by publishing photos of crime suspects.
The new law is part of the minority government’s coalition agreement and will restrict such crime fighting initiatives to the police and public prosecution department.
Answering MPs questions on the plan, Teeven said the size of the fines has not yet been worked out and that they must be proportional to the crime.
There have already been several cases where people have faced fines for similar offences. In on case, a shopkeeper was ordered to pay €500 for every day he refused to take down a photograph of a woman who had stolen from him. She turned out to be suffering from dementia.
