Minister says no to investigation into mobile internet price hikes

Economic affairs minister Maxime Verhagen sees no reason to order an inquiry into the recent decision by the three leading mobile phone operators to increase their charges, the NRC reports.

KPN, T-Mobile and Vodafone have all recently announced large price hikes for mobile internet to compensate for the effect on their profits of free services such as Skype and WhatsApp.
Answering questions from Labour MP Martijn van Dam, Verhagen said that price rises are allowed by law and that there is no reason to assume the mobile phone firms were acting together.
Competition
It is up to the competition authority NMa to start an investigation if it thought such a move was appropriate, the minister said.
He also pointed out that competition will be increased next year when a new frequency auction takes place.
Just before the summer break, parliament passed net neutrality legislation which stopped telecoms firms charging extra fees for services like Skype.
