Football club ADO Den Haag censured over anti-Semitic chants

Tuesday 09 August 2011

Football club ADO Den Haag failed to take action to stop anti-Semitic chanting at a home match against Amsterdam club Ajax in March, a court in The Hague said on Tuesday.

The club has now been ordered to take 'adequate measures' to stop 'undesirable and unacceptable' crowd behaviour, the court said.

The case was bought by a foundation set up to combat the rise in anti-Semitism. Ajax players and supporters are nicknamed de Joden - the Jews - although opinion is divided as to the reason.

The chanting on March 20 led to a five match suspension for ADO Den Haag player Lex Immers for joining in the singing after the match.

ADO maintains its officials had not heard the singing.

Lex Immers should have faced tougher punishment. His actions were racist and inflammatory.

I'm glad to see something being done here.
I was born in Glasgow, in the west of Scotland, where the protestant reformation is still being fough every season.
Celtic & Rangers, the two biggest clubs in the country emerged from this divide & are followed by catholics & protestants respectivly. It's a poisenous atmosphere although I'm told it aint so bad as it was.
Footbal is a passion for players & fans but do we really need to turn up the heat with religious biggotry?
