Fewer than one in four now smoke

The number of smokers in the Netherlands has fallen below 25% – down over four percentage points on five years ago, anti-smoking body Stivoro said on Friday.

The organisation said the decline is due to the fact anti-smoking aids are included in the basic health insurance package. ‘So it is incomprehensible that this will stop in 2012,’ spokeswoman Lies van Gennip told the Telegraaf.
Stivoro monitors smoking behaviour on the basis of a sample of 20,000 people aged 15 and oolder.
