Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell should do its civic duty and pull out of Syria, Dutch opposition parties said on Tuesday.

MPs are due to discuss the position of Shell with Shell Nederland director Dick Benschop later on Tuesday.
Shell is one of the biggest foreign investors in Syria, where the death toll during violent anti-government protests has now mounted to 2,200.
Alexander Pechtold, leader of the D66 Liberal democrats, said in Tuesday’s Volkskrant the oil firm has ‘more power than politicians’ because 95% of the country’s oil is exported to European refineries, mainly in the Netherlands, Britain, France and Italy.
And Labour, D66, GroenLinks and animal rights party PvdD will make a ‘moral appeal’ to Shell to pull out during the meeting, the NRC says. ‘[President] Assad’s tanks drive on Shell diesel,’ Socialist MP Harry van Bommel is quoted as saying.
The paper says Shell is likely to resist any pressure to pull out until there is a threat of EU-wide sanctions.
