Labour calls for end to deportation of child refugees

The Labour party is drawing up draft legislation which would allow child refugees who have lived in the Netherlands for at least eight years to stay in the country when they reach the age of 18.

The move follows the pending deportation of an 18-year-old Angolan boy who has lived with a foster family in Limburg since he was 10.
In an interview with the NRC, Labour MP Hans Spekman said children who have lived in the Netherlands for eight years are properly rooted and belong here.
The bill can count on the support of most of the opposition but will need to find a couple of extra votes to win a majority.
