The father of a 12-year-old girl who gave birth during a school trip should face an extra-long jail term for abusing his daughter, the public prosecution department said on Thursday.

The department has not yet said how long it thinks the father should serve but the maximum sentence for abusing a child under the age of 12 is 12 years.
‘When making a sentence demand, we always look at the consquences for the victim,’ spokeswoman Kirsten Smit is quoted as saying by the Telegraaf. ‘The consquences in this case are clear. Every time she looks in her daughter’s eyes, the victim will see what her father did to her.’
Previous conviction
The man, Calix W, has a previous conviction for abusing a daughter dating from 1995. Despite this, he was given custody of the victim after her mother left the family home. According to the Telegraaf, the judge was not aware of the earlier incident.
W has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment but is refusing to cooperate.
The girl, who is still at primary school, complained of stomach cramps during a school trip and went into labour. She did not realise she was pregnant. She and her daughter live with a foster family.
