Employers lax with health and safety rules for holiday jobs

Employers are often lax with adhering to health and safety rules for youngsters with a holiday job, according to a new report by the government inspectors.

Last year, inspectors carried out over 700 checks at supermarkets, in bars and cafes, and on farms to assess the position of youngsters with a summer job.
Among the problems identified: in 60% of cafes, employers broke the rules on working hours and rest periods for youngsters.
And in the farming and market gardening sector, children were allowed to pick crops which had been recently treated with insecticides and pesticides.
In total, inspectors handed out 55 fines and 661 warnings.
