Criminals to pay for their crime, in cash as well as prison
The justice ministry is introducing new legislation which will require convicted criminals to pay a fixed amount into a special fund to help victims.
The draft law has been sent out to the police, lawyers, victim support groups and the public prosecution department for consultation.
The size of the payment has not yet been determined. According to the Telegraaf, in Sweden convicted criminals pay €50 and in Belgium €137.50 under similar schemes.
Property
The draft legislation, drawn up by junior justice minister Fred Teeven, will also allow the authorities to sequester property from suspects during an investigation. This would prevent them from hiding cash and possessions prior to a conviction and so avoid paying fines and compensation if they are found guilty.
Teeven also plans to allow up to four relatives of the victims of crime to speak in court. Currently only one may do so.
