Christian Democrats ask for EU advice over paedophile group

Christian Democrat MP Pieter Omtzigt has asked the Council of Europe to state if it feels the Netherlands is meeting anti-child abuse treaties by not banning the paedophile lobby group Martijn, news agency ANP reports.

In June, the public prosecution department ruled that there is no reason to ban or prosecute the foundation, which seeks to legalise sex with minors.
But Omtzigt says he wants to know if this conflicts with the Treaty of Lanzarote, an anti-child abuse declaration which the Netherlands has ratified. He believes the foundation can be tackled under the treaty because foundation board members have criminal convictions.

In court

‘Eight current or former board members of Martijn have been convicted of sex crimes and another is currently being prosecuted,’ Omtzigt told ANP. ‘The treaty states explicitly that the foundation can be banned.’
The treaty states that the promotion of the sexual exploitation of children should be tackled, and that signatories should take steps to prevent the sexual grooming of minors.
