At least 12 injured in Twente football stadium collapse (update)

Thursday 07 July 2011

At least 12 people were injured on Thursday when part of Twente football club’s stadium in Enschede collapsed during building work.

According to the Telegraaf, by early afternoon 10 people had been taken to hospital and two remained trapped under the rubble. It is not clear how serious the injuries are.

According to one eye witness an ambulance helicopter from Germany has also been involved in taking the injured to hospital.

The stadium is currently being expanded with an extra seating ring, which will take its capacity to 30,000. Initial reports say it appears several support beams collapsed at one end of the stadium, sending part of the tribune crashing down.

One eyewitness said several people were on the roof of the stadium when it began to sway and collapse. Another said it went down 'like a pack of cards'.
