Aid minister disappointed by Horn of Africa fund-raising
Aid minister Ben Knapen is disappointed that an appeal to raise funds for the growing famine in the Horn of Africa has raised only €2m, the AD reports on Monday.
‘We cannot look the other way while so many people are threatened with death,’ Knapen told the paper.
Knapen is heading for a fact-finding mission in the region on Tuesday. According to the UN, more than 11 million people have been affected by the drought.
Nevertheless, Knapen said the government will not double the amount raised by the Giro 555 appeal, pointing out the Netherlands has already made €15m in emergency aid available.
