Pregnant smokers have more overweight children

Mothers who smoke while pregnant are more likely to have children who are overweight as they get older, researchers at Erasmus teaching hospital in Rotterdam said on Tuesday, news agency ANP reported.

The researchers studied 5,000 children in the Rotterdam area and found that the children of women who had smoked during pregnancy were 50% more likely to be overweight when they grew up.
It has been known for a long time that babies born to women who smoked are smaller than average.
The media coverage did not say what researchers thought was the reason why the children of smoking mothers were more likely to be overweight or if diet or social situation played a role.
