Nuclear waste transports to France resume, green groups protest

For the first time in six years, nuclear waste from the Borssele nuclear power plant in Zeeland is to be taken by rail to France for reprocessing.

The shipment, due some time this week, has been cleared by the Belgian courts, after Ghent local council tried to have it blocked.
Activists from environmental group Greenpeace plan to stop the train leaving and have chained themselves to the railway track. Greenpeace claims the three trucks are carrying the same amount of radioactivity as was released in the recent disaster in Japan.
Ten shipments are set to take place over the next two years. It is not clear exactly when this week’s shipment will take place.
