Nationally-important arts and cultural institutions, museums and libraries will be largely unaffected by far-ranging cuts in spending on culture, junior minister Halbe Zijlstra said in a statement on Friday.

The minister has drawn up a list of national institutions which will continue to get government funding from 2013, when spending on the arts will be slashed by nearly 25%.
‘The cabinet has opted not to slice spending across every sector but to make clear choices,’ Zijlstra said.
Fewer institutions
The number of orchestras will be reduced from 10 to seven, three of the seven national dance troupes will go, one of the three opera companies will be cut and three rather than five film festivals will get government support.
Twenty-eight museums will continue to get funding but will be required to raise at least 17.5% of their budgets from private sources.
According to the Volkskrant, the performing and visual arts will be hardest hit by the cuts.
