EU agrees compensation for salad farmers hit by E.coli

The European Commission is proposing a €150m aid package for Dutch, Spanish and other salad growers who have been hit financially by the E.coli outbreak in Germany.


Sales have fallen sharply since the outbreak began, and the cost to the Netherlands is put at €50m a week.

EU health commissioner John Dalli also warned Germany to stop releasing information about the suspected source of the outbreak because of the effect on salad sales. Cucumbers and bean sprouts have so far been cited as possible sources, leading to an export collapse.
Dutch health minister Edith Schippers said on Tuesday there is no need to avoid any sorts of Dutch food.
Junior economic affairs minister Henk Bleker is to visit Russia shortly in an effort to restore confidence in Dutch fruit and vegetables, an export trade worth €150m a year. Moscow has barred the import of Dutch produce since the outbreak.
