Dutch dj reaches UK top 10

Tuesday 28 June 2011

Dutch dj Vato Gonzalez has reached number seven in the UK top 10 with his single Badman Riddim'. He follows Tiësto, Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten in making an international breakthrough.

Djs are a good export product, says the Volkskrant. Exports of Dutch music have been rising for years and have now reached €64.9m, according to figures from Eurosonic, the largest European music conference. Around 40% of this comes from dance music in which the country leads the world.

Badman Riddim' is released in the Netherlands later this week.

Re the PVV MP who said radio 2 should play more Dutch music. Wonder how he'd react if BBC decided to play only UK artists! Wait for the whining about protectionism.
We live in a global community & Gonzalez is one example of that! We have the radio on every day in work & every station I've heard plays Dutch, English, French & German music.

Traitor!!! The lyrics are not in Dutch....

Not in Dutch well I doubt that anyone would listen to it if it was. Who F knows Dutch on an international scale.
When they hit the top 10 in the USA I will then give props.
I think just as you stated Donaugh!

I don't usually listen to base / house music - but when I do it'll be DJ Vato in my headphones, that's a good one.

With a name like Gonzalez, shouldn't we order up his geneology report a la PVV before celebrating Dutch music mastery?

We wouldn't want any side glory from some kind of third generation alloctoon or something, would we?

Acutally Geert, the PVV have shown that "foreigners" (real or makebelieve) are fine as long as they are famous such as footballers so the DJ is fine as long as he rakes in the prestige and says that Holland is the best place to live (or Israle if your the party leader), after their careers quiet or they retire, they will be of course condemned and told to leave.

If the lack of Dutch content on the radio really is a concern, just do what Canada does: a certain percentage of ALL media in Canada must be "Canadian Content" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_content Many other countries have the same policy.

There. Fixed.

The lack of Dutch content is the result of the lack of effort by our own community to work at it and support it. By forcing a content limit like in Canada results not in more commitment but poor quality content being thrust upon the community.

The reason for the 1971 30% Cancon rules was that radio refused to play Canadian music as it was obviously inferior, in their opinions, to American and British music just because it was Canadian. Good music was being ignored. It was a needed rule at the time but it can be argued that it outlived its usefulness.

Personally, I don't see evidence of Dutch artists being ignored on Dutch radio. And since Wilders (along with the rest of the government) don't give a crap about art unless its circuses or football, I doubt he listens to the radio anyways.

What next? Will Wilders demand that Golden Earring stop performing in English?
