Queen to remain head of government

The government will not change or limit the queen’s role in government, prime minister Mark Rutte told parliament in a memorandum on Tuesday afternoon.

His statement is at odds with a parliamentary majority, including alliance partner PVV, which favours a purely ceremonial monarchy.
At the moment, Beatrix is technically head of the government and plays a mediating role in the formation of new coalition cabinets.
‘The constitutional position of the queen is well embedded in our democratic system’, NRC reports Rutte as saying. ‘She is the symbol of our national community and plays an important role in holding this together.’
