Energy giant Philips is facing charges of corruption at its company in Poland where three former workers are accused of setting up a fund to bribe hospital directors in return for the purchase of Philips equipment, reports the Financieele Dagblad.

The paper, which says it is in possession of Polish public prosecution files, says the three workers will stand trial on bribery charges.
European companies quoted on the New York stock exchange, such as Philips, fall under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, says the FD. The company could therefore face judgement in the US. The German company Siemens was fined $800m in 2008 for corruption in Argentina, Bangladesh and Venezuela for example.
Philips has fired the three workers in Poland and begun an internal investigation, under pressure from the US authorities.
